From Mérida to Manhattan: Alfredo Romero’s Solo Exhibition in New York City

Alfredo Romero, the celebrated visual artist based in Mérida, Yucatán, has traveled this week to New York City for the inauguration of his exhibit titled Vestiges of Our Time. The show will open on March 27, 2025, at the Nicolas Auvray Gallery in Chelsea—one of the city’s most vibrant art districts. An opening reception will be held on April 3rd from 6 to 8 PM, and the exhibition will run through May 4th.

Known for his unique fusion of art, architecture, and archaeology, Romero has spent years documenting and preserving fragments of urban life—particularly those that are overlooked or endangered by modern development. His signature technique, Arqueología Strappo, allows him to lift and preserve actual layers of painted walls, signage, and street murals from Mexican cities, creating powerful canvases that honor forgotten communities and spaces.

This exhibition marks an important moment not only in Romero’s career but in the international recognition of Mexican contemporary art that speaks to memory, urban transformation, and identity. With works already exhibited in major institutions across Mexico, Europe, and Asia, Vestiges of Our Time positions Romero as a global voice for cultural preservation and artistic resistance.

As Romero puts it, “My goal is not just to recover these forgotten signs and dilapidated walls. It’s about giving them new life, making them timeless.”
